The 2016 Zone 4.1 Championship was hosted successfully by the FRME (Fédération Royale Marocaine des Echecs) in Agadir from 23 to 31 May 2016, under the auspices of the African Chess Confederation and the Moroccan Ministry of Sports. The Open section attracted 20 entries and the Women's section 16 players from Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
In the Open section, although the Zone 4.1 Grandmasters didn't play, there was a very strong field of International Masters featuring most of the rising stars of the Zone chess.
The Winner of the Women section, Rania Sbai (MAR) got the Gold medal, the title of WIM and qualified for the African Grand Prix 2017 while the Silver and the Bronze medals were won by WIM Latreche Sabrina and WIM Abdi Zineb Dina, both from Algeria.
In extremely hard fought matches, the Algerian cool IM Arab Adlane won the Open tournament and a place in the African Grand Prix 2017 followed by FM El Adnani Mokliss (Mar), Silver medal then IM Tissir Mohamed (MAR), Bronze.
The attraction of the tournament were the U12 players in the Women section who played well and finished the championship with 4.5 pts: Makhlouf Ahlam (MAR) and Amen Miladi (TUN).
The tournament was a great success with several players qualifying for WIM, WCM and CM titles.
The event went on smoothly thanks to the choices of the IO Mustapha Amazzal, Chief-Organiser and President of FRME and the hard work of the Chief-Arbiter : IA; IO & FT Bechir Messaoudi and the President of the Appeals Committee IA Abdelfattah Akkour, Organiser and Technical Director of FRME. Mr Lakhdar Mazouz of Algeria, Advisor of the FIDE President in chess development in Africa who supervised the event appreciated its success very well!
No delay and no complaints! Everything was meticulously organized and efficient! The results, photographs and the games were published on time on Chess-Results, Facebook and on the site of FRME to the delight of thousands of players in the region and the world!
