The 2014 Zimbabwe Open was the final event of the year for many players in the Southern part of Africa and the prize fund of USD 5, 000 attracted an impressive starting field with the top 15 players all rated 2100+! A strong contingent from Zambia as well as two top players from Botswana promises made this one of the most interesting and closely followed events of the year.

IM Rodwell Makoto from Zimbabwe, IM Kelvin Chumfwa from Zambia and IM Providence Oatlhotse from Botswana tied for second place what turned out to be one of the toughest tournaments of the year! Mushore Emarald of Zimbabwe and FM Richmond Phiri (Nkwazi, Zambia) finished with 6pts each but ranked 5th and 6th respectively. IM Chitumbo Mwali (Zambia), Micheal Kaoma, Masango Spencer (ZIM), Kela Siame (Red Arrows, Zambia) and Kahoba Lewis of Zimbabwe tied on 5.5pts and were ranked 7th-11th respectively.

This is the second major title the Nkwazi Chess Club talisman has won since he came back from police training at Lilayi mid last year. In October, he beat the whole stellar field of Zambian chess players to win the tightly contested 2014 Zambia Open Chess Championship held at OYDC in Lusaka and walk away with K10, 000 and a winner’s trophy.

However, in December he performed badly when he failed to make the national team that went for the Africa Individual Chess Championships in Namibia having lost all his games during the trials.
